Body found on bridge

TRICHARDT - The body of a man presumed to be in his sixties, was found with a gunshot wound to the head on Wednesday evening on the N17 bridge crossing over a stream running from the Trichardsfontein dam.

Police divers were called in to retrieve a handgun that was supposedly dropped into the water, but as it was already dark and the water level was too high, the dive was postponed until Thursday morning when the sluices were closed and after the water level dropped to about ankle deep, the pistol was retrieved.

The weapon was registered in the name of the deceased. The police have opened a case of inquest and request anyone that might be an eyewitness or have additional information, to please contact detective sergeant (F) Breytenbach on 017 638 0241.

The weapon was retrieved by police rescue divers on Thursday morning. The media spokesperson could not confirm if it was a suicide, but said that an inquest has been opened.
